Sport is incredibly important, not only does it help keep kids away from things like excessive screen time or video games, but they also teach valuable lessons in discipline, perseverance, listening, and teamwork.

All Bubu Island members are special and dear to our hearts. However, this summer, one Bubulander dad had an especially remarkable experience, the Olympic Games. We interviewed Fenerbahçe and Serbian national basketball team player, Olympian Marko Gudurić, about his journey at the Games this summer. Of course, we also talked about his thoughts on sports, kids, and family. Enjoy the read!

How do the Olympic Games differ from other competitions?

The Olympic Games are completely different. With over 10,000 athletes, it's an absolute honor and privilege to be among them and represent your country. It was incredible to observe their training routines, how they prepare for competitions, their habits, and the dedication that goes into their craft. It’s a unique experience like no other.

How did you prepare for the tough games, and how did you handle provocations or possible disrespect from certain teams (if any)?

Preparation is always consistent, repeating the same drills day after day, practice after practice, and game after game. There were no special preparations beyond that. As for provocations or disrespect, these things are normal on the basketball court, where everyone is giving their best to win. I try not to react, stay calm, and maintain good communication with my teammates. Teamwork is key to achieving the results we aim for.

How important was your family's presence or absence during the games?

Honestly, I felt their absence a lot during the month of preparations and throughout the Olympic Games. My family is my biggest support. The energy and strength I gain from them change my game, especially during tough times. Fortunately, my wife was able to attend the semifinal and third-place games, which was when I needed her the most. I’m certain that her presence contributed to me playing well and winning an Olympic medal.

In the crucial moments of a game, the crunch time, what do you think is more important: physical ability and talent, or mindset and mental strength?

That’s a great question. I would say it’s a combination of both. Without talent and skill, we wouldn’t be able to perform at the level we do. However, in critical moments, mindset and mental strength often become more important. We have so much training that our muscles remember what to do, but if we lose focus or confidence, we won’t be able to tap into our physical capabilities. For me, faith also plays a significant role, helping me find peace during challenging moments.

What did sport give you as a child, and how do you think it impacts the lives of kids?

As a child, sport brought me a lot of happiness, good memories, and great friends. Sport is incredibly important, not only does it help keep kids away from things like excessive screen time or video games, but they also teach valuable lessons in discipline, perseverance, listening, and teamwork. Of course, the physical benefits of sports are well-known at any age.

What traits specific to professional athletes would you like your son to have?

I don’t believe there are traits specific to athletes. We’re all individuals, and much of who we are comes from our families and upbringing. That said, the traits I would like my son to have, which sports can help foster, are respect for others, especially those who are older and more experienced, and a strong work ethic. I want him to understand that with hard work and dedication, he can achieve anything he wants.
